Treatment Experience and Philosophy

Dr. Goldman began his career in mental health at Chestnut Lodge, a private psychiatric hospital in Rockville, Maryland in 1975.  While working with patients and doing research, he completed a Master's Degree in Community Counseling Psychology. Since that time he has worked in private and public mental health services in Virginia, DC and Maryland, serving youth, families and adults.  Dr. Goldman obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the American University in 1993.  He began his private practice in 1996 as a part time addition to his full time positions with Prince William, Arlington and Fairfax Counties, and private agencies providing in-home, out-patient and residential treatment services.   He is currently providing out patient treatment services full time.

Although Dr. Goldman was trained in traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy, Behavior Therapy, Marriage and Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), hypnosis, EMDR, and Solution-Focused Therapy, he has come to approach psychotherapy from a client-based perspective.  He assists clients to identify their own goals for treatment and the relevant strengths and resources they already possess, and helps them develop strategies for building the skills needed to accomplish those goals and track their own progress.  He will provide guidance and offer treatment strategies only as a client sees fitting to their own goals and preferences.  Often, Dr. Goldman will assign homework for individuals or couples to complete between sessions.  Dr. Goldman will not set up a fixed weekly time for any client.  He will schedule at most 2-3 sessions in advance, and prefers to ask clients to evaluate the work after each session to determine whether they are comfortable with the progress and approach, and how much time they want between sessions to work on making changes and be ready to return.
